Want long, luscious locks but don’t have time (or the ability) to grow them?

That’s not a problem, you can simply clip in a set of hair extensions. Go from a sensible bob at work to long, glamorous curls for a night on the town in just a few minutes.
Don’t know very much about hair extensions? Check out these 10 things that you need to know today.
1. Human Hair Extensions Are Affordable
Human hair extensions are actually more affordable than you might have thought. You’ve probably heard about extensions costing thousands of dollars, but this is primarily when you’re looking at installation methods like weaves or cold fusion bonding.
Clip-in hair extensions are easy to use, reusable, and, most importantly, are inexpensive. Depending on length and thickness, they may cost between $30 and $300.
Some hair extensions can look cheap and start to shed easily. To get the most benefit from your extensions, be sure to choose real hair that will last much longer than the synthetic version.
2. Always Wear a Shower Cap and Satin Bonnets to Protect Your Hair
To keep all your hair healthy and luscious, wear a cap in the shower and a satin bonnet at night. It helps the moisture in your hair where it should be as well as reduces the frizz factor.
You also don’t have to put your hair in a ponytail to keep it gathered together at night and reduce tangles. Simply slip on your satin bonnet.
3. Use Only Sulfate-free Shampoo
Shampoos with sulfates strip natural oils and moisture from your hair, reducing its shine and causing it to be more brittle. Not to mention the harsh chemicals in these shampoos can also dry out and irritate your scalp.
Choose sulfate-free shampoos that gently clean your hair with having the same damaging effects.
4. Raw Indian Hair Extensions Can Be Expensive
While it’s totally possible to find real human hair clip-in extensions for an affordable price, raw Indian hair can start getting expensive. What’s more, for it to look uniform, it should be collected from the same donor, which isn’t always possible or comes at a premium price.
5. Hair Extensions Require a Lot of Time and Effort
Certain types of hair extensions, particularly those that have been chemically treated, begin to lose their shine quite quickly, get tangled, and start to shed. This has led to many people thinking that hair extensions are hard to maintain.
However, if you buy the right kind of hair extensions, they will continue looking gorgeous with just a bit of care.
Since clip-in extensions don’t touch the scalp, they don’t get oily like regular hair and will only need to be gently washed after 15-20 times of wearing them to remove hairspray and other hair product buildup. Additionally, those that are made from high-quality, real human hair don’t tangle quite so easily. They still tangle because all hair tangles, but it’s easy to gently brush it out.
6. Curling Irons Are Not Your Friend
Hair extensions made from real human hair are, well, real human hair. This means they will generally react the same to heat as your natural hair.
With that in mind, you can use curling irons on your hair, but it isn’t a good idea to do it often. The heat can damage your hair over time and, unlike normal hair, hair extensions are not being refreshed with new growth. To limit the damage, apply a protectant spray to your hair before curling.
If you want to wear curled styles frequently, it is best to purchase curly hair extensions. It will save you time during your morning hair routine anyway.
7. Use a Sunscreen for Your Hair
Sun exposure can open the hair’s cuticle, dehydrating and even removing melanin from your hair. That’s why when people spend a lot of time in the sun their hair seems to lighten in color and be more dry and frizzy.
Wearing hair sunscreen can help to avoid this. You can get products with an SPF number just like sunscreen for the skin. Other products are marked as being “UV protective”. These deflect UF rays to keep them from drying out your hair, but won’t necessarily protect the skin on your scalp.
8. Take a Vitamin Supplement
Just like the rest of your body, your hair needs proper nutrition to grow healthy and strong. Important vitamins include:
● Vitamin A for growth and moisturizing oil
● B-Vitamins for healthy growth
● Vitamin C for blocking free radical damage
● Vitamin D for creating new hair follicles
Look for a multi-vitamin with high levels of these nutrients for the best results.
9. Sleep on a Silk Pillowcase
Did you know that your pillowcase could be killing your hair? Cotton fabrics absorb moisture which means your cotton pillowcase is sucking moisture out of your hair (and skin!) all night long.
A better option is to sleep on a silk pillowcase that isn’t so absorbent. The smooth fabric also allows your hair to slide more easily across the pillowcase as you move, reducing breakage and cutting down on tangles.
10. Make Sure You Get Hair Treatment Every 2-4 Weeks
Visit your hairstylist frequently to keep your hair in gorgeous condition. Professional hair treatments, such as keratin, are highly effective at giving your hair what it needs to care for itself as well as protecting your hair from the elements.
Your hair extensions could look amazing, but if your real hair is dry and full of split ends, the effect is ruined. Not to mention it’s obvious that you’re using hair extensions.
For best results, keep up on your hair salon visits!
